10 qualities of an Exceptional Employee!

How do you approach the world?  What preferences or tendencies do you rely on to get you through the day? The following qualities can help set you apart in the workplace. Put them to use and maximize your potential!

1- Delay gratification

“That’s not in my job description” Is something you would never hear from a “great” employee.  Exceptional employees work outside the boundaries of job descriptions, and never expect a reward for a “job well done.”

2- Tolerate conflict

Great employees don’t seek conflict but don’t run away from it either. They’re able to maintain composure while presenting positions calmly and logically. 

3- Focus

“When things start to get difficult, don’t forget to fly the plane.” Great employees don’t get distracted by cranky customers or interoffice squabbles. They can differentiate between real problems and background noise and focus on what matters. 

4- Courageous

Great employees are willing to speak up when others are not. They think before they speak and choose the best time to do so.   

5- Ego in Check

Exceptional employees have egos and it is what drives them. They admit when they are wrong and are willing to do things someone else’s way to maintain team harmony.

6- Never satisfied

Great employees believe things can always get better. No one is ever done growing and there is no such thing as good enough when it comes to personal improvement. 

7- Recognize when things are broken and fix them

“Oh, it’s been that way forever,” isn’t in their vocabulary. Great employees will see issues or problems and fix them immediately. 

8- Accountable

Great employees own their work, their decisions, and results—good or bad, they bring their mistakes to a manager’s attention rather than hoping no one will find out. 

9- Marketable

Internally, marketable means “likeable.”  Great employees are well-liked by co-workers. They have integrity and leadership skills. Externally, managers can send these employees out to meet with clients without worrying about what they’ll say or do.

10- Able to neutralize toxic people

Great employees can keep their feelings in check. When they approach a toxic person, they do it in a rational way. They don’t allow anger and frustration to fuel the chaos. 

As you may have noticed, these qualities are probably not in your job description. They are, however, the qualities that will set you apart from your coworkers and set you up for success.
